Together with the Friends of St John's, we managed to raise approximately £500 for the school, with many of the school children taking part and dragging their parents, carers and siblings around several laps of our obstacle course.

We loved the sense of community at the event, with each child being cheered on by name and volunteers of all ages to help in abundance (particularly if they got to throw paint and squirt water at the teachers ðŸ™‚). One of the main aims at Axis RDY is to get people moving and at St John's School on Saturday, you certainly did that.

They listened carefully and discussed the different types of books they like to read, from comics to chapter books. The Bunny vs Monkey books by Jamie Smart are currently the Dolphins’ top recommendation. The Dolphins were very excited to borrow a book to take home using their brand-new library cards, with the librarians helping as many children as possible to find the perfect pick.

It was wonderful to see so many parents and carers in the audience cheering the children on. Thank you to everyone who found their rhythm and joined in the fun during the audience participation! This performance was the culmination of 10 weeks of hard work under the expert tuition of Mr Whitmarsh from Dorset Music Service. We also owe a massive thank you to Miss Chant for her fantastic leadership in conducting the samba band with such passion. Well done, Pandas; you truly brought the carnival spirit to our school!

The children were divided into small groups and rotated through activities that focused on different parts of the story.

They learnt about Palm Sunday and thoughtfully decorated palm leaves with their own hopes and dreams. They also explored key events including the Last Supper, Jesus’ time in the garden and his death on the cross. As part of their learning about the Last Supper, the children shared a small piece of bread and a grape, before listening quietly and respectfully to a prayer.

The children certainly demonstrated their curiosity during our science day on Wednesday! We started the day with an amazing assembly led by 'Super Sian' from Mad Science, who wowed us with incredible experiments. Thank you to the Friends of St John’s for funding this for us.

Throughout the day, each classroom was turned into a laboratory, investigating a different key question. Our young scientists have been busy experimenting to find the answers to questions such as:

  • Do the people with the biggest hands pick up the most sweets?

  • How far can a hoop glider fly?

  • Which object makes the biggest splash?

  • Which biscuit dunks the longest?

  • Does toast always land butter side down?

The children absolutely loved getting hands-on with their experiments, and there were lots of excited 'oohs' and 'aahs' echoing around the school as they made brilliant discoveries! 

We’ve also been delighted to hear and see the brilliant science experiments many of our children have been conducting at home. Thank you for supporting your young scientists. It has been great to hear them talking about their discoveries and seeing the wonderful photos and results shared through Google Classroom. Your engagement truly helps bring learning to life.

We had a fantastic virtual visit from the incredibly talented author and illustrator, Rachel Bright. Rachel shared insights into her life as a writer and illustrator, engaging the children with a fun animal noise guessing game. The children were captivated by a spirited reading of The Lion Inside, featuring plenty of enthusiastic roars and squeaks, and they were thrilled to learn how to draw the mouse in a special tutorial. The event concluded with a lively reading of The Turtle who Turned the Tide, complete with audience-participation noises, leaving everyone inspired and ready to pick up a book. A huge thank you to all the parents who joined us for World Book Day, taking time to come in and read with the children. We especially appreciate the incredible effort that went into all the wonderful character costumes. To add to the fun, the children enjoyed completing a special quiz to see if they could guess the book characters our staff had dressed up as! We all chose a character from Julia Donaldson's books. Can you guess who we all are?

In geography they have learnt that a town has many houses, offices and shops. They used their check list and ticked off all the different key items that they found. It was fun walking past their houses and their favourite places in Wimborne,  It was very hard walking past the cafes, they smelt delicious! The Giraffes class were true ambassadors for our school with many happy smiles from the local community.

The 14 strong squad travelled to The Hawthorns Stadium in Birmingham (home to Championship team West Bromwich Albion) to play the final against Repton Preparatory School from Derby. In a highly competitive and entertaining match, St. Michael's won 3-1.

The team came to visit us this week to tell us about their experience and show us their medals and trophy. It was very inspiring for our children to see such talented and dedicated young athletes in person. This gave us all a powerful example of what passion, teamwork and perseverance can achieve.

It did not stop them from having fun, exploring the Quay, spotting wildlife and features of the harbour that they have been learning about in class. They asked questions to the captain of the boat like "How deep is the water here?" and "Are there sharks in the harbour?" They saw Brownsea Island, Studland beach, the chain ferry, cormorant birds and so much more. While they had to cut the trip a little bit short because of the great British weather, their spirits were always high and they look forward to a trip to a local park soon. School Council, Worship Team and School Ambassadors joined the residents of Harleston House for an informal Christmas service. Dolphins performed to the residents of Old Market Village and Pandas sang to the residents of Bennett Lodge. The children showed our St John's values by being respectful, polite and kind. We are so proud of the children not only for their confidence to sing and dance to a new audience, but also for being so happy to chat and ask interesting questions too. Very impressive!

The Forest School instructor was very impressed with their knowledge of dates, causes and ways Londoners tried to put out the fire. The children learnt about the three elements of fire - heat, oxygen and fuel - and how taking one of these away would extinguish a fire. They took part in a bucket chain challenge to feel first hand what it was like for the Londoners to draw water from the River Thames and pass it along a chain to put the fire out. Finally, the children saw a live demonstration of how easily the fire spread due to the houses being close together and made of wood and straw.

I was so impressed to see the way that the children helped each other and worked as a team. Thank you to the volunteers who came in today to support the children making their decorations. Everyone is welcome to look at the children’s learning, see the new displays and admire the decorations created on decoration morning.

They got to spend some time experiencing what lessons were like in Allenbourn. Half of the class took part in an art lesson where they explored an artist and recreated his work while the other half took part in a gymnastics lesson. A real highlight for a lot of the children was being driven to Allenbourn in their minibus!

We felt proud that we had tidied our local area.

They explored the Quay before boarding the boat and taking in fantastic views of the islands. They even spotted a seal! They had a lovely picnic lunch and finished with a play in the park. What an adventure!

They learnt about how our food is grown, fed some hungry sheep, met some inquisitive cows and had a tractor ride. In the afternoon, they made soup and bread using the ingredients grown on the farm. Thank you to all the adults that helped make the day even more fun.

They experienced creating their own shooting rockets, learnt about our solar system in the planetarium and took part in many scientific experiments about space and sound. They all had a wonderful day and learnt so much in preparation for this term's topic.

They had a fun-packed day creating space passports, solar system pictures, moving astronauts and fitness training. They finished the day with a rocket launch and a space disco.

Thank you to Mrs Selby, Mrs Struck and our volunteers for organising this event. There was a wide variety of plants and the school is looking beautiful with the new additions. The children enjoyed planting and will take responsibility for watering the plants in the warm weather.

The children had the opportunity to learn about each country including the location, the capital city, the flag, the languages spoken, landmarks and lots of other interesting facts! There was a range of activities to complete including making a sea life collage, making a River Nile crown, making pizza, tasting food from Nepal and line dancing. To complete the day, the whole school gathered in the hall to share what they had learnt and what they enjoyed about the day. The finale was the whole school joining together to perform the line dance they had practised during the day. What a wonderful day everyone had!
